On Maundy Thursday Christians remember the gathering of Jesus and his disciples for the Last Supper. This year, we will be remembering the ancient Jewish custom of the Seder, the meal of the Passover, which the Hebrews ate before they set off with Moses from Egypt to the Promised Land.
Foot washing has also been a tradition of Maundy Thursday, following Jesus command: "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." We demonstrate this love by re-enacting the scene from the Gospel of John when Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. People of all ages are encouraged to participate.
At the end of the service, as the choir chants Psalm 22, the bread and wine that remain from Communion are moved to the Altar of Repose. Slowly and reverently the candles, other vessels, and books are removed. When the tables are bare, all depart in silence.
Good Friday, April 19
Music: Organ Prelude and Hymns
The veneration of the Cross on Good Friday is an expression of our faith and hope in Christ whose Paschal Mystery we celebrate and share in most fully in the Easter celebration of the Resurrection.
