Evensong: Nov. 5

The first Evensong of this season is on All Saints Sunday, November 5 at 5:00 p.m.

The setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis was composed by Harold Friedell (1905- 1958). The anthem is one of the classics of the Anglican choral repertoire, “And I saw a new heaven” by Edgar Bainton (1880-1956), who was born in London and settled in 1933 in Sydney, Australia, where he was director of the State Conservatorium of Music.

The prelude and postlude of the service will be the world premiere of two settings of Engelberg composed by Cincinnati composer Brenda Portman and dedicated to John Deaver. Dr. Portman is organist at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church and has become well known for her organ compositions with several works receiving their premieres at Washington National Cathedral. The two pieces to be premiered at Trinity are part of a collection of preludes and postludes on the same hymn tune composed by Brenda to be published by Augsburg Fortress next spring and dedicated to her former teachers.

A reception follows the meditative service of Evensong, which lasts less than an hour.
