Evensong: Feb. 23

The next Evensong takes place on Sunday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m.

Join us for Evensong on Sunday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m. when the Trinity Choir sings the joyful Evening Service by English composer Bryan Kelly (b. 1934) based on Latin-American rhythms.

Kelly studied composition with Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music in London, where he later taught.  Further study was with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

The anthem is Evening Hymn by Balfour Gardiner (1877-1950) and is considered to be one of the finest pieces of choral writing.  Before Gardiner turned 50, he gave up composing complaining that his muse had left him. This was after writing two symphonies and other orchestral works, a string quartet, a string quintet, many songs, choral works, and instrumental pieces.

The orison (prayer) is John Rutter’s lovely “God Be in My Head.” The organ prelude is Prelude on Song 46 by American composer Leo Sowerby (1895-1968).  The postlude is Covington Toccata by Daniel Gawthrop (b. 1949), commissioned in 2010 to celebrate 30 years of ministry at Trinity by John Deaver.

A reception follows this meditative service.
