Community Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals, Families and Students

Did you know that in the Cincinnati/NKY Metro area there are 270,000 people who experience food insecurity? Children, families and individuals may have had a meal this morning, but are unsure if there will be another meal tonight, or even tomorrow. For most of us, not having food in our cupboards, or not being able to buy food to feed our families is something that we can’t imagine. Yet many of our neighbors face that dilemma each day.

What can we do to help? Three local non-profits could use your help this summer:

The Freestore Foodbank distributes thousands of pounds of food to those in the greater Cincinnati area. They are in need of volunteers this summer to help with packing food for distribution. Volunteers as young as 13 can work alongside parents.

Last Mile Rescue is a local organization that is working to connect surplus food with our community members in need. Through the use of volunteers and the technology of a phone app, Last Mile connects food suppliers (Kroger, UDF, convenience stores, restaurants, sports stadiums) with local food pantries, schools and agencies who are able to provide food to our neighbors who need it. Volunteers can pick up a rescue in their car and deliver to a local non-profit with no more than about a 30 minute time commitment.

Be Concerned is a food bank right here in Covington that supplies food to nearly 1,500 families each month. Volunteers are needed to stock/organize food and to help residents shop Tuesday through Friday. Volunteers as young as 14 can donate their time and younger children if they work with a parent.
