Parish Challenge - CHNK Therapeutic Recreation Fund
The Trinity Outreach Committee would like to issue a Parish Challenge! During the committee meeting in February, we heard from Rick Wurth about some of the effects the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the children supported by CHNK. In response to an increase in the number of incidents among their residents, CHNK is working to set up Therapeutic Recreation programs to provide their residents the opportunity to participate in equine therapy and circus therapy. The Outreach Committee has committed $5000 from our 2021 budget toward this program and would like to challenge Trinity’s parishioners to match this amount.
Therapeutic recreation allows youth in treatment to “play with purpose.” This approach to treatment uses activity-based interventions to improve the child’s psychological, emotional, and physical health, particularly in situations where the child has experienced significant trauma such as abuse or neglect, or they have a debilitating mental disorder. Also known as “recreational therapy,” it helps restore and/or rehabilitate the child’s level of functioning in their home environment, in the classroom, among peers, and in other social settings.
Incorporating therapeutic recreation into the treatment plan for each client in CHNK’s residential treatment programs will help further provide clients with the tools and skill sets needed to manage their mental health needs while achieving and maintaining optimal levels of independence, productivity, well-being, and quality of life.
Your tax-deductible donation will allow youth in CHNK's residential treatment programs to participate in horse-assisted therapy and circus therapy. CHNK's residential clients have limited opportunities for social interactions outside of their fellow clients and CHNK staff. They also have limited options for physical activity beyond traditional activities (e.g., bike riding, basketball, walking, etc.), particularly given the current limitations presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. CHNK partners with New Day Ranch (Verona, KY) and Circus Mojo (Ludlow, KY) for these therapeutic recreation options.
