Oct. 20: John Deaver Performs J. S. Bach’s Clavierübung III
John Deaver will perform J. S. Bach’s Clavierübung III on Monday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. For this recital John has chosen to perform the 12 pieces with pedal. The work begins with the majestic Prelude in E-flat Major and is followed by three chorale preludes on the Kyrie and one on the Gloria in Excelsis, sometimes giving the work the nickname of Organ Mass. Next follow chorale preludes on chorales for each of the six parts of Luther’s Catechism: Ten Commandments, Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, Repentance, and Eucharist. The work ends with the Fugue in E-flat Major which summarizes the mystery of the Trinity found through the work. The fugue in three large sections uses as its subject the opening notes of the hymn “O God our help in ages past.” A reception will follow the recital.
